FAQ
What exactly is a waterproof PVC-coated collar — and how is it different from a regular collar?
PVC collars are made from polyester webbing which is then sealed with a transparent PVC (polyvinyl chloride) coating. This coating creates a non-porous barrier that prevents water, dirt, bacteria, and odors from ever soaking into the material.
Traditional nylon collars are lightweight and affordable, but they absorb everything — water, mud, bacteria, and the natural oils from your dog's skin, which leads to that familiar wet-dog smell that won't wash out completely. For dogs that swim, hike, or spend time outdoors, nylon tends to wear out faster and requires frequent cleaning to stay hygienic.
Is it actually stink-proof, or does it eventually start to smell?
The collar itself is genuinely stink-proof. Because the PVC coating is non-porous,
odor-causing bacteria have nowhere to live and nothing to absorb into.
How do I clean it?
For everyday dirt and grime: wipe down with a damp cloth. Done in ten seconds.
For a deeper clean after a muddy hike or lake day: rinse under warm water with a small amount of mild soap (dish soap works great), scrub lightly if needed, and hang dry. The collar dries fast — usually within an hour.
Avoid: harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive scrubbers, which can degrade the PVC coating over time. Also avoid the washing machine — it's not necessary and the agitation can wear down the hardware faster.
Is PVC-coated webbing the same as Biothane®?
Almost — but not quite. Here's the breakdown:
BioThane® is actually a brand name (owned by BioThane Coated Webbing Corp.) for a specific type of PVC or TPU-coated polyester webbing made in the USA. Think of it like 'Kleenex' for tissues — Biothane is the branded version of a broader material category.
Our collars use PVC-coated polyester webbing that works on the same principle: polyester webbing core + PVC outer coating = waterproof, odor-proof, easy-to-clean. The performance characteristics are the same — non-porous, flexible, durable, and stink-proof.
Bottom line: if someone mentions a 'Biothane collar,' they're talking about the same category of waterproof coated webbing collar that we make.
Is it safe for my dog's skin? Will it cause irritation or hot spots?
Yes, it is safe — PVC-coated webbing is hypoallergenic and latex-free, making it a great choice for dogs with sensitive skin. Because it's non-porous and doesn't absorb moisture, it's less likely to harbor the bacteria and mold that can cause skin irritation with fabric collars.
That said, any collar — regardless of material — can cause irritation if it's fitted too tight, left on when wet for extended periods, or not checked regularly. We recommend:
• Fitting the collar snugly but with room for two fingers
between the collar and your dog's neck
• Checking under the collar regularly for any signs of redness or irritation
• Removing the collar during rest time if your dog is prone to skin issues
If your dog has a known allergy or skin condition, always check with your vet first.
Will the pattern fade over time?
Our patterns are printed onto the polyester webbing before the PVC coating is applied — which means the design is sealed beneath a protective layer rather than sitting on top of it. This makes the colors significantly more fade-resistant than screen-printed or surface-printed collars.
With normal use, the colors hold up very well. A few things that can accelerate fading over time:
• Prolonged direct sun exposure (UV rays are the main culprit for any outdoor gear)
• Exposure to harsh chemicals like DEET, bleach, or strong cleaners
• Excessive chewing — which will damage the coating regardless
Deeper, richer color tones tend to hold longer than bright fluorescent shades. Keep the collar out of harsh sun when not in use, avoid chemical exposure, and it should look great for the life of the collar.
Is it stiff? Will it be uncomfortable for my dog to wear every day?
This is one of the most common questions we get — PVC-coated collars do have more structure than fabric, but they're surprisingly flexible and comfortable once on your pup.
The collar is flexible enough to bend and shape in your hands. With regular wear it softens slightly and naturally conforms to your dog's neck. The edges are smooth and won't cause rubbing or chafing under normal conditions.
How long will it last? Is it actually more durable than a regular collar?
Significantly longer than fabric or nylon — yes. The tensile strength comes from the polyester webbing core, which is incredibly strong, and the PVC coating protects that core from the moisture, UV damage, and bacterial breakdown that degrades fabric collars over time.
Under normal use — daily wear, regular swims, muddy hikes, machine-free cleanings — a PVC-coated collar should last several years. The one thing that will shorten the collar's life faster than anything else: a dog that chews on it. If your dog has a chewing habit, no collar material will hold up indefinitely — but PVC will outlast fabric or leather by a wide margin.
Can it stay on during swimming and baths?
Absolutely — that's exactly what it's built for. You can leave the collar on during swims, baths, lake days, sprinkler sessions, and rain walks without any concern.
After saltwater exposure (ocean, gulf), we recommend rinsing the collar in fresh water to prevent any potential corrosion on the hardware over time. Saltwater is harder on metal than fresh water, even on brass.
After swimming, the collar will dry quickly on its own — usually within an hour depending on conditions. No need to remove it to dry separately. The webbing doesn't hold water the way fabric does, so it won't stay wet against your dog's skin.
How do I know what size to order?
The most important measurement is your dog's neck circumference — not their weight or breed. Dogs of the same breed can have very different neck sizes depending on their build.
How to measure: Use a soft tape measure (or a piece of string, then measure the string) around the base of your dog's neck, behind the ears. Add 1–2 inches for a comfortable fit.
Our sizing:
• Small: 7¾" – 11" neck | ¾" wide
• Medium: 11¾" – 15" neck | ¾" wide
• Large: 14¾" – 18" neck | 1" wide
• XL: 18" – 22½" neck | 1" wide
If your dog's neck falls near the top of a size range and they have a thick, muscular build, size up. The collar is fully adjustable within its size range and comes with an sliding strap keeper to secure excess webbing — clean look, zero flapping.
